My Story

We are writers. We understand the value and power of a good book. We know that reading for pleasure and empowerment makes us more aware and informed. It helps us grow our imaginations. It makes us more empathetic and understanding of other people and cultures. It supports our health and wellbeing. It increases our ability to learn new skills. It helps us to communicate our ideas more effectively. It opens doors. It brings joy.

But, recent research from the National Literacy Trust in the UK shows that reading for pleasure amongst children is at a 20-year low. Only 35% of 8-10 year old children read for pleasure. Figures in the USA from the National Endowment for the Arts show a similar decline – from 53% in 2012 to only 39% in 2022.

The Reading Agency is a UK charity with a mission to empower people of all ages to read. They know that not everyone has an equal start in life, so they champion the proven power of reading by providing activities for all ages and backgrounds. They support readers to create social connections and improve their reading skills. By working with public libraries, prisons, hospitals and other community settings, they help people manage their health and wellbeing through reading.

Writers need readers. By supporting The Reading Agency, we acknowledge the crucial importance of investing in future readers.

100 Days of Writing is a writing challenge, currently hosted by me, Katherine Clements, author and writing coach based in the UK. Over 250 writers, across genres and continents, began writing every day in September 2024 and will reach Day 100 on 20th December. I have set up this fundraiser to celebrate reaching Day 100, in the hope that everyone taking part will chip in!

Whether you have taken part in 100 Days of Writing or not, please consider donating to this important cause.
